Being Grateful?

As my friend rightly pointed out to me, when we take the other person for granted, then the relationship may start its downward slope. If I take for granted the love of my parents, all the household work that Mom does for all, then I no more will feel grateful for that. I will start thinking that it's my right to be at the receiving end. Or perhaps, will see it as the most usual thing that happens everyday. Nothing noticeable about it. More surprisingly, if that
help makes an entry into my expectations from that person, I might feel disappointed if I don't get that "help" some day.
But if I am helped by a stranger quite unexpectedly, I will feel obliged for his/her help. Somewhere subconsciously, it will be in my mind that I should reciprocate in some form whenever I get a chance.
Is it justified then not to have the same attitude towards the people I am close to?
Somehow, I am just wondering whether I have forgotten to be grateful to them...
